ReactOS aims to replicate NT starting at NT5 (Server 2003) as NT5 was a stable and functional o/s whose fundamental components (APIs) still comprise the basis of later versions of Windows. It took the team more than 4 years to combine the best of UNIX, VMS, and OS/2 to create the NT architecture. The NT architecture was originally designed by a team led by David Cutler, a former lead developer of Digital Equipment's VMS operating system. The term "NT" refers to the whole Windows NT series from 2000 until today. This in turn is provided by the Win32 subsystem which is a layer that sits upon the NT kernel.
